Anti-corruption experts address human trafficking and migrant smuggling. In a recent Bangkok conference hosted by the UNODC, the RSO of the Bali Process, and Thailand’s Anti-Corruption Commission, over a hundred experts from Asia and the Pacific explored the intricate link between corruption and transnational crimes like human trafficking and migrant smuggling.

Rebecca Miller, Regional Coordinator for countering human trafficking at UNODC, emphasized that corruption, involving both public and private sectors, plays a pivotal role in enabling these crimes. A 2021 report revealed corruption’s influence at every stage of the trafficking process, from entry to judicial proceedings.

Participants showcased case studies illustrating how corruption grants traffickers impunity, erodes public trust, undermines the rule of law, and violates human rights. Civil society representatives stressed treating victims as part of the solution and recommended comprehensive reforms to address corruption at all levels. Calls were made for accountability in state-owned enterprises and private sector firms exploiting cheap labor.

The conference concluded by highlighting the need for a collective regional effort and information-sharing to combat transborder crimes effectively.
